Yirui Jia (b. 1997) was born in China and currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. She’s a current MFA Fine Arts candidate at the School of Visual Arts. As an artist Jia acts as both a director and a participant in her work. Through many characters and actors’ behaviors, the paintings are often fragmentary notes of her reflections of the world. The elements that appear in her artworks are often ordinary daily objects that are easy to identify or personal experiences from shared daily events. The character is often transformed and reinvented from stereotype popular culture and cartoon characters based on the artist’s interest and memories.  In her newest works one can eschew adherence to a single aesthetic style in favour of a non-hierarchical exploration of material and form. The exuberant colors and painted imagery, encapsulate the viewer in a spontaneous and animated universe. Yirui Jia’s paintings give the impression of being simple, almost turning high art into child like worlds that are occupied by fragmentary tales and rival narratives. Her works are a mixture of figurative elements and expressive colors and shapes, reminding different artistic movements such as Abstract Expressionism, Symbolism but also Fauvism for her colors.
